Visual Arts Teacher

West Sound Academy (WSA) is a college preparatory International Baccalaureate (IB) World School for grades 6-12 with an approximate enrollment of 110 students.  WSA is located on a rural 20-acre campus in Poulsbo, Washington, just a 30-minute ferry ride from Seattle. WSA focuses on preparing compassionate, courageous, and creative students capable of excelling in a global community.

West Sound Academy is seeking a 1.0FTE middle and upper school teacher who specializes in Visual Arts. WSA offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, and this position includes teaching IB Visual Arts HL & SL, and WSA will provide IB training if needed. This teacher will join a faculty and administration of 20 and reports to the Head of School. Responsibilities include planning and delivering engaging curriculum to small classes with an average size of 20 students.

Duties include:

    • Classroom instruction, with an emphasis on teaching Visual Arts skills and elements of design while inspiring students to stretch their comfort zones and expand their knowledge of these concepts:
      • Developing aesthetic awareness;
      • Demonstrating critical, analytical, judgmental, and evaluative skills;
      • Understanding the historical, social, and cultural context of artistic accomplishments;
      • Using skills to design, create and complete visual art;
    • Provide a variety of learning experiences so that students demonstrate skills and concepts learned through displays, portfolios, and a variety of communication mediums, including electronic media presentations;
    • Classroom instruction of the assigned subject matter(s) in a rotating block schedule, with an emphasis on instilling excellent student skills with the purpose of building understanding, autonomy, and inquiry;
    • Organized management of detailed reporting & logistics for IB Visual Arts students;
    • Understanding the skill levels and needs of students in both middle and upper school;
    • Written evaluations of students two times during the year combined with frequent communication to parents via email or phone;
    • Conferences with students and colleagues three times per year;
    • Active collaboration with other middle school and subject area teachers;
    • Attending department and faculty meetings and evening events as requested;
    • Advisory role to a specified number of students and twice per week group advisory meetings with students;
    • Leading a lunchtime or after school club activity for at least one semester;
    • Development and the implementation of a three week June Term course of focused study based on the teacher’s interests and experience for multi-age groups of middle and upper school students;
    • Active participation in the life of the school community

Successful candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in a related field. Candidates must have experience teaching at both the middle school and upper school levels. The ideal candidate would be flexible, a team player, and willing to step in as needs arise. Familiarity with the International Baccalaureate is a bonus. The teacher would recognize the unique needs of middle school students and upper school students and be a substantial and stable presence during their day. It can’t be emphasized enough how important having strong organizational skills is for this position.
