Our Story
A School Built Around What Young People Can Become.
West Sound Academy was founded on the belief that students thrive when they are known as individuals, challenged intellectually, and given opportunities to discover their strengths and use them with purpose.
Today, that founding idea continues to shape an education that combines academic challenge, creativity, meaningful relationships, and a global perspective.
Our Mission
West Sound Academy supports students through an engaging educational journey, preparing them to be world citizens. We welcome students into a community where they are embraced, celebrated, and challenged.
Our mission comes to life through a school experience that balances belonging with challenge, individual growth with shared responsibility, and intellectual curiosity with engagement in the wider world.
Founded with a Different Vision for School
West Sound Academy began in 1998 with a vision from longtime educators Ed Frodel and Gordon Parke: to create a school where rigorous academics, creativity, experiential learning, and strong relationships could work together.
From the beginning, the school placed the individual student at the center of the educational experience. Students would be challenged, but they would also be known. They would develop intellectual skills while exploring the arts, pursuing their interests, and learning to contribute to something larger than themselves.
That philosophy continues to guide West Sound Academy today. The programs have evolved, the campus has grown, and the school has become an International Baccalaureate World School, but the fundamental idea remains: young people do remarkable things when they are challenged, supported, and given room to discover who they are becoming.
A Natural Fit with the International Baccalaureate
West Sound Academy's founding philosophy found a natural partner in the International Baccalaureate. Both emphasize inquiry, critical and creative thinking, reflection, intercultural understanding, and students taking increasing ownership of their learning.
WSA has offered the IB Diploma Programme since 2010, bringing an internationally recognized framework to the personalized, relationship-centered education that has defined the school from its beginning.
Today, IB principles shape how students learn across the school: asking meaningful questions, considering multiple perspectives, communicating ideas, reflecting on growth, and applying learning beyond the classroom. WSA's own explanation of its IB approach emphasizes thinking, research, social and communication skills, global citizenship, diverse perspectives, and autonomous learning.
A Community Where Everyone Can Flourish
At West Sound Academy, we believe learning is strongest when people feel that they belong. We welcome students, families, and educators with different backgrounds, traditions, identities, experiences, and perspectives because encountering different ways of thinking deepens everyone's learning.
Diversity is a strength.
Different experiences and perspectives enrich our understanding of the world.
Inclusion is a practice.
We intentionally create classrooms and a community where people can participate, contribute, question, and be heard.
Equity is a responsibility.
We work to ensure students have the opportunities and support they need to engage fully in their education.
Belonging is the foundation.
When students feel known and valued, they gain the confidence to challenge themselves, take risks, and grow.

Our Story Is Still Being Written
As WSA looks ahead, we remain committed to an education that prepares young people not simply for what comes next, but to help shape it.
For more than 25 years, West Sound Academy has evolved while remaining grounded in its founding belief in the potential of each student. We continue to ask the same kinds of questions we ask our students: What can we learn? How can we grow? And how can we contribute meaningfully to the world around us?
