Our very own, Paul Burback, is the North Kitsap Secondary Teacher of the Year!
We are so proud to announce that West Sound Academy’s music teacher, Paul Burback, is North Kitsap’s Secondary Teacher of the Year!!!
Paul demonstrates the ability to meet students exactly where they are - musically, culturally, and personally - and then elevate them beyond what they thought possible. By inviting students to choose their own repertoire, from Beethoven to BTS to BTO, and to explore multiple instruments, he creates an environment where every student feels seen, valued, and capable of success, regardless of prior experience or background. Says Catherine Freeman, West Sound Academy’s Head of School, “Through music, Paul teaches perseverance, discipline, teamwork, empathy, creativity, and courage.”
His classroom operates as a collaborative musical community, where students are treated as real musicians, building both technical skill and confidence. He actively seeks out students’ musical influences by listening to their playlists, making them feel heard. Through this combination of respect, flexibility, and high expectations, Paul consistently inspires students to grow, take risks, and reach their full potential. Says the Head of School, “He helps students understand that growth comes through practice, that mistakes are part of learning, and that excellence is achieved not through perfection but through persistence.”
Paul brings the depth and credibility of a professional musician into the classroom, and he has intentionally chosen to dedicate himself to education. That choice is evident in everything he does; teaching is not simply his job, but a reflection of who he is at his core. “Paul embodies the kind of educator every student deserves, and every school hopes to have,” adds the Head of School. “He leads with kindness, authenticity, enthusiasm, and an unwavering belief in young people.”
His students benefit not only from his technical expertise, but from learning alongside someone who actively lives and breathes music. Paul models what it means to be both an artist and a mentor, showing students that excellence and generosity can coexist. This authenticity is part of what makes his impact so enduring; students don’t just learn music from him; they learn what it means to pursue a craft with passion, humility, and purpose. Says Paul, “It brings me a great amount of joy to see young people finding a true creative outlet and being free to explore their individuality. I developed a passion for playing music at a young age, and it has pleasantly guided me through my life ever since. It feels wonderful to share something that has been so special for me with the youth in our community.” We are so lucky to learn and work side by side with Paul every day!!! Congratulations!!!!
