Using Technology with Purpose

Technology is an important part of learning at West Sound Academy, but it is a tool, not the focus of the classroom.

Students use technology when it enhances learning: to research, create, collaborate, analyze information, communicate ideas, and access resources that extend what is possible in the classroom. At the same time, many of the most important parts of a WSA education happen without a screen through discussion, experimentation, hands-on work, reading, writing, creating, performing, and connecting with other people.

Our goal is to help students develop the judgment to know not only how to use technology, but when and why to use it.

Technology for Learning

Across subjects, students use digital tools in different ways depending on the learning taking place. Technology might support students as they:

Conduct research and evaluate sources
Write, revise, and collaborate
Analyze data and model ideas
Create presentations, media, art, music, and other original work
Communicate and collaborate with teachers and classmates
Organize assignments and manage long-term projects
Access course materials and feedback

Teachers determine when technology supports a particular learning goal and when another approach is more effective. A laptop may be essential for one activity and closed for the next.

Bring Your Own Device

West Sound Academy has a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program. Students in grades 6–12 are expected to have a laptop available for use at school and at home.

Families provide their student's laptop. A variety of devices can meet WSA's requirements, allowing families to choose a computer that works for their student and their budget while meeting the school's minimum specifications. Students should bring their laptop to school each day charged and ready for use.

Technology Policies

Digital Citizenship & Responsible Use

Learning to use technology responsibly is part of preparing students for life beyond school.

Students are expected to use school networks, devices, online resources, and digital communication in ways that support learning and reflect the same standards of responsibility and consideration expected throughout the WSA community.

This includes:

Protecting personal information, passwords, and accounts
Respecting the privacy and work of others
Communicating appropriately in digital spaces
Using reliable sources and crediting the work and ideas of others
Following teacher expectations for technology use during class
Using school technology and networks for appropriate purposes
Taking responsibility for choices made online

Cell Phones at School

WSA is a cell-phone-free school during the school day.

Students do not use cell phones during classes, passing periods, lunch, or other parts of the school day. Limiting access to phones helps students remain present in their learning, engage more fully with one another, and participate in the life of the school community without the constant distraction of personal devices.

Families who need to reach their student during the school day can contact the school office.

Artificial Intelligence

Generative artificial intelligence is changing how people learn, create, communicate, and work. At WSA, we believe students need to learn how to navigate these tools thoughtfully, ethically, and responsibly.

AI can be a valuable learning tool when its use supports the purpose of an assignment and is permitted by the teacher. It should not replace the thinking, writing, problem-solving, creativity, or reflection that students are expected to develop themselves.

Teachers provide guidance about when and how AI tools may be used in their courses and assignments. Students are expected to be transparent about their use of AI and to follow expectations for academic integrity and attribution.

As these technologies continue to evolve, so will our approach. Our goal is not simply to regulate new tools, but to help students develop the judgment to use them responsibly while understanding both their possibilities and their limitations.

Building Healthy Technology Habits

Responsible technology use goes beyond following rules. Students are learning to manage distractions, organize their digital work, evaluate information critically, protect their privacy, and make thoughtful decisions about how technology affects their learning and relationships.

These habits develop over time. Through classroom expectations, advisory, and conversations across the school, we help students become increasingly independent and intentional users of technology.

At WSA, being prepared for the future means more than knowing how to use the latest tool. It means knowing how to think critically, make good choices, and use technology with purpose.
