West Fest 2026: when creativity takes center stage.
There is something special about West Fest.
Each May, West Sound Academy’s Celebration of the Arts transforms our campus into a showcase of student creativity, giving students the opportunity to share the music, art, stories, and ideas they have developed throughout the year. But West Fest is about more than displaying finished projects. It is about giving students an audience for their imagination—and showing them that their creative voices matter.
At West Fest 2026 on May 9, that spirit came to life in especially memorable ways through the Visual Arts and Music programs.
Building worlds from the ground up
For students in the Fantasy World Building and Character Design elective, the semester culminated in an imaginative journey from the Art Studio to West Fest.
Students invented entire lands from scratch, beginning with maps that incorporated cartography, map-making symbols, legends, and compass roses. From there, they developed characters, heroes and villains, mythology, history, and artifacts connected to the lore of their worlds. They even constructed fantastical creatures using wire-frame armatures and foam clay.
Each student created an immersive display representing their imagined land, inviting families and visitors to step into worlds that had existed only in their creators’ imaginations just months before. Guests received passports and traveled from one student-created “land” to another, collecting stamps along the way.
What stood out most was the depth to which students took their ideas. As the semester progressed, students became invested not only in their own worlds, but in one another’s stories and characters.
The creativity took some wonderfully unexpected turns. One student developed an entire voting system for a character running for office. Another created hand-drawn stickers inspired by the magic system of their world. One student designed a complete travel pack for her character’s journey, complete with hardtack, dishes, maps, and journals.
These details demonstrate what can happen when students are given the freedom to take an idea and truly run with it.
At West Fest, families didn't simply see an art project. They got to experience the storytelling, problem-solving, creative thinking, and sheer imagination that had been happening quietly in the West Sound Art Studio all semester.
Bringing Shakespeare to life
Theatre offered another opportunity for students to transform their learning into a creative, collaborative experience.
As the final project for their Shakespeare unit, students in the 9th Grade English Language and Literature class performed an abridged production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at West Fest.
Each student took on at least one performance role, memorized their lines, developed their own blocking, and designed props and costumes for the production.
Rather than simply studying Shakespeare's language and themes on the page, students used the dramatic text as a blueprint for performance, discovering what happens when literature is brought physically and collaboratively to life.
The process asked students to interpret the text, make creative decisions, work together, and take ownership of their roles. The result was a performance that made Shakespeare feel immediate, accessible, and alive for both the students performing and the families watching.
Finding their voices through music
Throughout the spring semester, all four music classes worked toward the same goal: selecting, designing, rehearsing, and ultimately performing music for the West Sound community. Students from every grade level, 6th through 12th, took the stage.
The result was a lively mix of Rock, Pop, and Jazz—and, as always, a few surprises.
Even teachers joined in the fun, with Forrest performing an Ozzy Osbourne song and Luca bringing the crowd a spirited rendition of That’s Amore.
But perhaps the most important part of the process happens long before the students step onto the West Fest stage: the students choose the songs they perform.
That choice means every class is different. Rather than working from a predetermined list, students select music that reflects their interests, strengths, personalities, and musical ambitions. For their teacher, that makes every semester both fun and challenging—and ensures that every performance is uniquely theirs.
Over time, West Fest has become a meaningful tradition for the WSA music program. Students know that they will have the opportunity to share their creativity with their community, and they know that what they create will be valued.
A Celebration of Student Voices
At West Sound Academy, students are encouraged to explore their interests, make choices, experiment with ideas, solve problems, and create something that is genuinely their own. West Fest gives them a public stage for that work.
It is also a chance for families to see a different side of their students—to walk through an imagined world their child created, hear a song they selected and rehearsed, or witness a creative skill that may not always be visible in the traditional classroom.
And when our campus fills with music, art, theatre, and imagination each June, we get to celebrate not just what our students have made, but who they are becoming as creative thinkers, storytellers, collaborators, and confident young people.
That is the magic of West Fest.
