West Sound Academy Theatre Company presents Radium Girls
West Sound Academy is proud to present Radium Girls by D. W. Gregory, in collaboration with Port Gamble Theater in Port Gamble, Washington, May 1–2, 2026.
Radium Girls is a powerful drama based on the true story of the women who fought for justice and truth amid corporate greed and scientific misinformation.
Produced, acted in, and designed by our students, and performed in collaboration with Port Gamble Theater, the production is directed by Thalia Wolff.
About the Play
Set during 1918-1928, Radium Girls follows Grace Fryer, a luminous-dial painter who discovers that the radium used to paint watches is making her and her coworkers gravely ill. As Grace pursues a legal fight against her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic company man who cannot reconcile radium’s therapeutic promise with the mounting tragedies, she faces not only corporate resistance but also tension within her own family and community.
The play is a moving exploration of courage, labor rights, and the price of scientific progress.
Students in the after-school Theatre Company researched real-life events and people on whom the play's characters and events are based to inform their performances. In addition, students in the Theatrical Design and Stagecraft elective class designed and developed the sets, costumes, props, lighting, and sound cues used in the production.
